The version of FEMdesigner that I am using is the one that integrates with Alibre, a low cost 3D design package. There was an issue in that FEM designer only works with Windows 64 bit and Alibre 32 bit, so I had to set up a system to suit. FEMdesigner is easy to use, but has similar issues to other FEA software. The boundary conditions must be carefully defined in order to obtain meaningful answers. I have mainly used it for thermal analysis, as that is an area in which I most experienced. Once I managed to clearly define my boundary conditions, I was able to get a useful picture of the temperature profile in a finned heat exchanger that I was designing. I need to work to use it for stress analysis in some other designs I on which I am working.
Pros: price, integration with Alibre ease of use
Cons: Operating manual (in preparation)
